Mark 10:32-4532 They were on their way up to Jerusalem, with Jesus leading the way, and thedisciples were astonished, while those who followed were afraid. Again he took theTwelve aside and told them what was going to happen to him. 33 “We are going up toJerusalem,” he said, “and the Son of Man will be delivered over to the chief priests andthe teachers of the law. They will condemn him to death and will hand him over to theGentiles, 34 who will mock him and spit on him, flog him and kill him. Three dayslater he will rise.” 35 Then James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came to him.“Teacher,” they said, “we want you to do for us whatever we ask.” 36 “What do youwant me to do for you?” he asked. 37 They replied, “Let one of us sit at your right andthe other at your left in your glory.” 38 “You don’t know what you are asking,” Jesussaid. “Can you drink the cup I drink or be baptized with the baptism I am baptizedwith?” 39 “We can,” they answered. Jesus said to them, “You will drink the cup I drinkand be baptized with the baptism I am baptized with, 40 but to sit at my right or left isnot for me to grant. These places belong to those for whom they have been prepared.”41 When the ten heard about this, they became indignant with James andJohn. 42 Jesus called them together and said, “You know that those who are regardedas rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their high officials exercise authority overthem. 43 Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must beyour servant, 44 and whoever wants to be first must be slave of all. 45 For even theSon of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom formany.”Philippians 2:1-81 Therefore if you have any encouragement from being united with Christ, if any comfort from his love, if any common sharing in the Spirit, if any tenderness andcompassion, 2 then make my joy complete by being like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and of one mind. 3 Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vainconceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, 4 not looking to your owninterests but each of you to the interests of the others. 5 In your relationships with oneanother, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus: 6 Who, being in very nature God, didnot consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage; 7 rather, hemade himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in humanlikeness. 8 And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself by becomingobedient to death—even death on a cross!1 Peter 4:10-11 10 Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serveothers, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms. 11 If anyone speaks, they should do so as one who speaks the very words of God. If anyone serves, theyshould do so with the strength God provides, so that in all things God may bepraised through Jesus Christ. To him be the glory and the power for ever and ever.Amen.Acts 6:1-7 1 In those days when the number of disciples was increasing, theHellenistic Jews among them complained against the Hebraic Jews because theirwidows were being overlooked in the daily distribution of food. 2 So the Twelvegathered all the disciples together and said, “It would not be right for us to neglect theministry of the word of God in order to wait on tables. 3 Brothers and sisters, chooseseven men from among you who are known to be full of the Spirit and wisdom. We willturn this responsibility over to them 4 and will give our attention to prayer and theministry of the word.” 5 This proposal pleased the whole group. They chose Stephen, aman full of faith and of the Holy Spirit; also Philip, Procorus, Nicanor, Timon,Parmenas, and Nicolas from Antioch, a convert to Judaism. 6 They presented thesemen to the apostles, who prayed and laid their hands on them. 7 So the word of Godspread. The number of disciples in Jerusalem increased rapidly, and a large number ofpriests became obedient to the faith.
